Welcome, Welcome...

SPORTSCENTER/COLIN COWHERD on February 3rd, 2008
Welcome all to my blog. I am doing this blog to fulfill a class requirement, but I am actually looking for ward to it. I also expect people who look at the blog to participate.
Now, onto the blog itself. This blog can be used for many different things, but the majority of topics will be based upon controversy in sports. It can be any sport, anything from the great sport in the world, which is american football to... lets say soccer... See I might have already caused a conroversy. Anyways, feel free to post and reply on anything that might come up. I will be making posts every couple of days.

Now onto this weeks controversy and something I am very passionate about. That is, as I already mentioned football, and for all intensive purposes football on this blog is always known as American football. The patriots lost and now the world is right, or is it? The question of the week is: Is Bill Belichick leaving the Super Bowl just 1 second early a big deal? Personally, I haven't seen such a poor sport in all my life, but it seems to me that sports media is giving him a free pass? If anyother coach in the entire NFL had done this he would have been murdered. When Lebron James left the court 3 seconds early he got killed. Rand Moss? Killed, but from some reason when Belicheat does it no one says a word. Why does the media give him so many free passes? So... You tell me American... Or the two people that look at this.

I would just like to add two cents to the topic purposed by HARVEY.... The situation with Bilichek ( i just butchered that) leaving the field early normally wouldnt be a big deal. I am fully aware that it was a unique situation with how the game ended with the game clock. However i am also fully aware of what it means to have sportsmanship and class. Two things that the patriots have claimed to have the entire time they were making front page news with their win streak. I think that Coach B (not going to attempt again) should have made the effort to stick around and congratulate players and other coaching staff with more class then just bailing and leaving the field BEFORE THE GAME EVEN ENDED! Funny how easy it is to be the perfect sport when the ball rolls your way, but when the test of character and class comes calling you literally DUCK AND RUN...to the locker room. I am not surprised that the true colors came out. Not to mention the supposedly bruised and beaten Brady and Moss who wont play in the Pro Bowl...cry me a river. Im out like the Pats class and character!

Question: How silly is soccer?

Answer: Very silly. I would say it is almost as silly as figure skating...but not quite.

As for Mr. Belichick: His leaving the field with 1 second left is yet another classless act. But seeing him leave the field in a rampage was priceless.

So...to conclude my comment. Belichick is worse than figure skating which is worse than soccer, but not by much. Fun Blog Harv. Keep it up!

First of, what an exciting time in Harv's young life....starting a blog, soon to follow is his beloved facebook. Who knows what Harv will pull off next. Secondly, I am not a big fan of the Patriots, namely Coach B, Moss, and Brady... James made a point about the Pats supposedly being classy when the ball is rollin' right... well, they aren't classy. Coach B pushing reporters, camera men, and fans out of the way after every game to shake hands is not classy... Watching him leave the game early, considering the time clock issue, was not surprising to me at all. What a poor sport, sore loser, bum... reminds me of james after I beat him one on one... I hate the PATS, go GIANTS. I love Ely.

Harv,

If I was the Commissioner I would fine him a million dollars and make him sit out the first 4 games of next year. What an embarrassment to the league. Only 98 million people were watching. He is a proven cheater and now he shows he’s a complete loser. (I would fine him another half mil for dressing like a homeless bum) The loss was COMPLETELY HIS FAULT. He had the best, most experienced players but changed nothing, even after half time. Tom Coughlin came with a strategy and worked on it the entire game. Bill was completely out-coached, out-classed and now instead of being remembered for going undefeated in the season he will be forever known as the class-less coach that couldn’t take watching Eli Manning taking a 1 second knee to end the game. What a boob.

Is soccer a sport?????????????????????????????????????????????????

Mike and Audrey said...

Utah49er,

First off. Love the name. I must say that I have an equal affection for Utah and 49ers. You combining the two together just blows my mind with happiness.

Second off. Of course soccer is a sport! What kind of ridiculous question is that? It has the sophistication of hopscotch, with the excitement of running a marathon. Plus, it caters to all people of the world who don't know how to count past the number 2. Another plus, you get some really cool team names like Real and United. What's not to love?

Lackey said...

I called a Giants vic ever since they beat my Packers two weeks before so i was rooting for the Giants. My opinion, which rules, is that Belichiken was not trying to make a statement with his controversial exit. Everybody thought the game was over, he congratulated Caugh, and went on his merry way. As it was happening, i have to say that it didn't even cross my mind that he was being a poor sport. It wasn't until Monday morning when all the sports radio shows were talking about it that it even crossed my mind that he was displaying no class. It's funny because I was actually thinking in my head while it was happening that he was leaving because he knew Giants had won and he didn't want to try to drag it out any longer. I thought it was actually classy that he and the team didn't try to put together any defense but just admitted defeat so the Giants could celebrate sooner. I think everybody made a big deal of a very small deal. People generally love to do that.

Mike and Audrey said...

I completely disagree Lackey. Belichick knew there was a second left. The official was trying to get him to go back to the sidelines the whole time he was walking out there. He is a sore loser and wanted to get off the field as soon as possible. The last thing he wanted was to wait on the sidelines while the Giants kneeled on the ball and hear the crowd erupt.

I'm a little surprised that you didn't think anything of it while you were watching the game.

Cry me a river! Why are you wasting your breath talking about the Super Bowl? It's over. Tom Brady and the Heartbreakers couldn't win the last game of a perfect season. We're talking about football here. You know the 'sport' where 20 games is a full season! In just seven days a real sport begins...Baseball. You know, where a season means playing more than once a week, in fact it means playing nearly ten times as many games as football. So here's to a real sport...Let's go RED SOX!!!

Now, on to real sports controversy.

The Rocket is in D.C today where evidence will be presented before a congressional hearing that proves he's a roider. You might remember the Rocket from the 2000 World Champion Yankees. He was the one with the other FIVE juiced-up players on the team!! Yeah, let's cry about the Pats 'cheating'. And everyone is so glad that they lost the Super Bowl (remember were only talking about the 'sport' of football here), because if they had won it would have been tainted, right? As tainted as the juiced up Yankees' championship?

I better sum up before I waste the rest of my day.

Baseball is better than football.
The Rocket is a roider.
A Rod cheats on and off the field.
Jeter carries a purse.
Damon has no soul.
Red Sox are World Champs.
Pats had a perfect seaon.
Celtics...enough said.

I guess the only Boston team that isn't winning is team Romney.

Let's go Red Sox!!

For the record.. i am much more classy then the patriots when i lose.. and i dont lose to branon one on one.. i may let him win once in a blue moon.. and even that is out of the charity in my heart. I also vote harv as starting a facebook page soon.

Mike and Audrey said...

Umm..I thought the title of this blog was sports controversy. So why are we talking about baseball?

How can there possibly be a controversy in a sport no one watches? When PLAYOFF baseball games start to get TV ratings equal to those of NFL PRESEASON football games, maybe then we can talk baseball.

Harv said...

Harv, I don't know how to blog but I agree with you-that was horrible sportsmanship and embarassing. It's odd that they didn't make a fuss about it. I've only seen it discussed once briefly on ESPN. Odd because usually they take those kind of things and really blow them out of proportion.

Im not a huge patriots fan, but who freakin cares if he went off the field early? there was one second left, he already went to shake the hand of Tom. what do you want him to do, go off the field, wait, and then go back out and shake his hand again? he shook his hand and left. big freakin deal. everyone who hates the pats, hates them because they're so freakin good. to go 18-0, never been done before, amazing, and in my book, still one of the best teams ever. and tom brady could go down as second best quarter back ever, 2nd to peyton manning. they will both beat favres records. yes they did lose the superbowl, so sucks for them, and you cant say they're the best team ever, because they didnt wint the superbowl.

Eli manning is freakin sweet too, and just shut up all of his critics. runs in his family to be a good quarterback.

totally agree with mike on the fact that when baseball comes close to having some sort of ratings that compete to football, then you can talk smack. the only reason that they can play as many games as they do, which is freakin boring, is because the pitcher and catcher play catch for more then half the game, and then once in a while someone gets a hit, and then a couple of defensive guys get to run around. stupid. and since they play so many games, no one really cares if they win or lose anyway until they get to the playoffs, so baseball pretty much has no intensity. i get so sick of watching sportscenter in the summer, because all it is, is high lights of baseball. someone getting a big hit, or someone having a diving catch. gets old.

hands down, football is better.

however, march is the best time of year. non debatable. go duke.

Of course everyone watches pre-season football games. There's only twenty games in the regular season, so you've got to watch your favor halfletes when the opportunity presents itself, right! Besides, football's not an intellectual game, so any moron can watch it. And we all know there's no shortage of those. :)

Mike and Audrey said...

Newman,

If you're saying that I would rather watch football than chess because chess is too intellectual....you're probably right. In that case, I'm a moron...guilty as charged.

But if you are saying that baseball is an "intellectual" sport, I would love to hear that argument. Baseball players aren't even intellectual enough to make decisions for themselves, they have to have a coach at every base telling them whether or not to advance.

Could you imagine a coach, standing behind the quarterback, yelling out who he should throw it to or where the blitzes are coming from?

And if baseball is so "intellectual", could you describe to me what a manager actually does during a game? To me it looks like he doesn't do anything other than, sit back, chew tabacco, and wait for his pitcher to start struggling so he can put in a reliever.

I don't know about you, but just thinking about it makes my brain hurt. I think I'll just stick with football where there is no thinking involved apparently.

Mike,

First, let me clear the air. I wasn't implying that you were a moron. I actually met you at a race, and anyone who runs a road race has my eternal respect...even if they like football.

Harv,

Is the subject of this blog really sports controversy or is it more like a forum for all those who waited all season long to see the Pats lose? I'm not seeing a whole lot of other controversy here, just a lot of anti Patriots rhetoric. Second, Mike (whom I've established I have a great deal of respect for) and I are simply having a gentlemanly discussion regard the strengths and weaknesses of our respective favorite sports. Perhaps we're taking our lead from your initial post, which stated "This blog can be used for many different things, but the majority of topics will be based upon controversy in sports. It can be any sport, anything from the great sport in the world, which is american football to... lets say soccer... See I might have already caused a controversy". See, you've already established two things: controversy is based in opinion, which it is; and some sports are better than others (notice you refer to football as the 'great sport in the world'. I'm assuming you're reserving the title of greatest for something else, perhaps baseball?).

As an admitted Patriots fan, I will be the first to admit my opinions are highly biased. However, the national expression of joy following the Patriot's first defeat in over a year disturbs me just a bit.

My hat is off to the New York Giants for playing very well and accomplishing what was thought to be highly unlikely. As for Coach Bellichek's untimely exit from the field--I think we can cut him a bit of slack. He, like the gentleman he is, shook Coach Coughlin's hand and, along with a whole bunch of other people, probably thought the game was over.

As for you, New Man-- can't we like two things equally? Where on Earth did you learn that one should constantly ask, "Whch is better?"

Blake said...

Bad Sportsmanship? It was the best I have ever seen. The game was over, clock was running down, Coughlin had been drenched with gatorade.......Billicheck walked to the middle of the field shook Coughlin's hand, congratulated him....and then left the field so the Giants could celebrate their victory.

Bill was just conceding the inevitable, and allowing the Giants to get their celebration earlier.

If anything, it is the Referees who screwed the end of the game up. The two teams had agreed the game was over, shook hands, and then the referees make the Giants come back on the field, clear the field of all the fans, push the Giant's bench players back on the sideline (after they were already celebrating)....the referees killed the excitement of the moment.....not Bill, he was trying to get off the field quickly so the Giant's could have the stage to themselves.....what is so wrong with that?

Hey, Harv. Cool site.

I think Coach B is classless, as well. He's a genius, but one who has drifted into the dangerous territory of meglomania. Sports and politics often breed these types. Here, in Detroit, our Mayor's involved in a scandal in which he thought he could get away anything and everything, and we've seen it happen to Presidents and countless Legislators. Bob Knight comes to mind in basketball, too. USC, LSU, and Ohio State are programs run by coaches who believe they are demi-gods and that it's okay to skirt the rules because they are special. Honor is a rare commodity in sports, in the world!, these days...

Responding to: "Is Bill Belichick leaving the Super Bowl just 1 second early a big deal?" Of course there are two sides to every story, on one hand the clock ran completely out, the NY Giants rushed onto the field deeming themselves as the Super Bowl champions. Even though the clock was reset to 1 second, the game was declared over when the Patriots failed to deliver a high scoring offense. From the other perspective, to be a true sport about any game, once the official returned 1 second to the clock, he (Belichick) or any coach in that position should smile for the cameras and the millions of ticket holders and TV viewers. In my opinion, he was truly disappointed and just wanted to leave the field. I too shared that disappointment when Dallas failed to secure their slot as the NFC champions... However, I would never respect the Cowboys if they walked away from a game even if it's just 1 second left on the clock.

Ok I'll admit it. Though I'm not a huge NFL fan, I would have enjoyed to see the Pats go the whole season without a loss. On the other hand, I really respect the Mannings and am happy for Eli, especially for winning the season after his brother did. About Belichick, it's hard for me to imagine somebody else reacting differently. After winning 18 in a row, with a huge favor of winning the Super Bowl, and having the outcome be exactly the opposite of what you hoped for and expected? Yeah I might try to bury my head in the sand too.

To Newman:

Charles Barkley was once asked whether professional athletes were role models for kids. He said "I don't believe professional athletes should be role models. I believe parents should be role models.... It's not like it was when I was growing up. My mom and my grandmother told me how it was going to be. If I didn't like it, they said, "Don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out." Parents have to take better control."

So, are athletes role models? Should they be? I'd like to have posed those questions to Ty Cobb, arguably the greatest major league baseball player of all time. He was also a racist and major league asshole.

Wow guys thanks for letting me know about this. I guess I will have to get in on this a little late.

I have great respect for the Patriots and their accomplishments this year. However if Belichick was my coach I would have punched him in the face in the locker room. After I had to eat his "humble pie" all year while pursuing perfection, he was obviously too embarrassed with a 17-14 loss, in which I left it all on the field, to stay and support us for the last play. This was without a doubt the most classless thing I have ever seen, and I can't believe the NFL puts up with him. LT was right on with his assessment of the Patriot's head coach. In a league that fines its players for TD celebrations, I can't believe the NFL will put up with such a blatant disregard for class and sportsmanship. Didn't the sports world rip Randy Moss for this exact same thing a few years ago? I really can't believe there hasn't been more outrage concerning his actions.

To sum it all up, congratulations to Tom Brady and the rest of the Patriots for their great season (too bad they choked in the end) but I for one am sick of Belichick and his lack of integrity that has plagued the world greatest game for the past 5 years (spy-gate, fake injury reports, classless celebrations after wins, boring interviews, and now lack of sportsmanship in a losses). It is time for this guy and his homeless cutoffs to call it quits for the good of the game.

P.S. All these trendy Red Sox fans make me laugh. So now you have 2 in 80 years, congrats to Red Sox nation. It is funny they can't get over the whole evil empire thing when really they do the same thing the Yankees do as far as just buying talent from these smaller market teams (Big Papi anyone?) and Manny is playing for table scraps apparently. Not to mention this new self-righteous attitude on the steroids issue. Did you really think Mitchell would name a Red Sox player when he is a couple years removed from being on their payroll? Although Mike is right baseball is stupid, but something has to get us through the summer.

any chance that we can start talking about something else than bilichek. like i stated before, big freakin deal that he went off the field early. to those who think it was a big deal, what did you want him to do? go back to the side lines and just stand there while he watched the giants knee the ball and then go shake hands again? he didnt need to be there, the game was over. what would him being there have changed? absolutely nothing.

i agree blake, the refs screwed it up. both teams have decided that game was over, so the refs should just agree, and call the game. im so sick of refs with a power trip. they have too much control over the game, and should be punished for making stupid calls that change the results of the game, not talking about super bowl, but for example: last night villanova played goergetown and it was tied at 53 with little time. villanova tried to get a shot off but didnt, Gtown got the ball on their end of the basket, villanova player barley bumped wallace who had the ball and ref called a foul with .1 second left. i mean give me a freakin break. Gtown hit two free throws to win the game and Villanova didnt have a chance. that ref should be fired. not only was it not a foul, but he called it with ,1 second left. drives me crazy.

as for the argument that football isnt an intellectual game. and baseball is? all you have to know in baseball is that if the ball is hit to you, throw it to the base where the runner is running. you might occasionally have to choose between two bases when there is more than one person on base, which rarley happens.
you have to memorize and know so much more with football. with coaching strategy, to the players knowing the plays like the back of their hand because if they dont they dont play.
what do managers for baseball do during a game? just sit on their ass and and do nothing. coahces for football have to make a decision every single play. and the players have to know that play with out hesitation. i would say much more, but there is so much more i could say that it would take too long.
so which of the two isnt an intellecutal sport?

ok new subject. how about college basketball?

Mike and Audrey said...

One final comment on Belichick then I will say no more. Jordan said:

"what did you want him to do? go back to the side lines and just stand there while he watched the giants knee the ball and then go shake hands again?"

YES! That's what every other coach in the league WOULD have done!

On to the baseball discussion (sorry, Harv, for getting sidetracked). I don't hate baseball. In fact, I would say I envy baseball fans. I wish I could enjoy it! Every year, around April, I tell myself that I am going to try to follow baseball in order to give me something to watch during the long, dreary football offseason. But then around May I realize its just impossible.

And I don't buy this "baseball is intellectual" and "if you only understood the 'nuiances' of the game you would like it" talk that we hear from time to time. Soccer fans like to say the same. I mean, we all love a good nuiance from time-to-time, but how about considering the alternative: the sport isn't as fun to watch as other sports.
